Mark Newman has been in the insurance industry for 31 years, having begun his career as a trainee broker with Sedgwick Group in London in 1985 and later joining J&H Ltd. After the merger with Marsh in 1997, Mark led its International Broking Division Team, specializing in non-marine lines, with particular focus on Asia Pacific, Latin America and Europe. In 1999, Mark transferred to Guy Carpenter, the dedicated reinsurance brand within Marsh & McLennan Companies and in 2000, Mark moved to Tokyo, Japan to establish Guy Carpenter’s first dedicated facultative operation in Asia Pacific. Mark then relocated to Singapore in September 2003 to assume the Asia Pacific CEO role, and helped to establish new operations in Sydney, Melbourne, and Seoul. In May 2008, Mark moved from being a broker to a risk carrier, and joined Catlin Asia Pacific, assuming the position of regional CEO for both single risk and treaty reinsurance. Following the acquisition of Catlin Group by XL, Mark left and became CEO, Sompo Canopius Asia Pacific and Middle East & North Africa in August 2016. Mark is responsible for all activities within this region, and to further develop the Sompo Canopius footprint, profile and underwriting expertise. Mark loves to run and regularly takes part in charity runs across the region. He is married with two daughters, with home being Singapore.
